Soaked in military history, art and culture and a relaxing way of life, Gilgandra is a popular stop on the Newell. Located 45 minutes from Dubbo and perfectly half way between Melbourne and Brisbane, Gilgandra is at the junction of three major highways, Newell, Oxley and Castlereagh. This charming town offers a selection of affordable accommodation, restaurants, cafes, bakery, shopping, events, sightseeing, attractions and entertainment.
It’s a great place to stop and stretch your legs, or spend a few days discovering the region. The Coo-ee Heritage Centre takes you back to 1915, telling the story of the sons that left Gilgandra to honour their country and walked the Coo-ee March to become a part of history.
The Hitchen House located in the CBD portrays the spirit of the digger, with a collection of Boer War, WWI, WWII, Vietnam and the 1915/1916 recruitment marches memorabilia on display.
Along the Gilgandra Newell route is the historic village of Tooraweenah, nestled in the foothills of the Warrumbungles, meander through the scenic Warrumbungle Tourist Drive onto Coonabarabran.
